How tip is calculated

Tip = bill × (tip percentage ÷ 100). The total is bill + tip. When splitting evenly, divide the total by the number of people. The per-person share can be rounded up to the nearest dollar so no one has to make change — many groups do this and treat the small surplus as extra tip.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the rounding option leave the actual tip slightly higher?

Rounding adjusts the per-person amount upward, which means the table collectively pays a few cents to a few dollars more than the strict total. The extra goes to the server as additional tip — most people prefer this to the alternative of someone owing $0.43.

How do I split a bill if some people ordered more?

For uneven splits, calculate each person's subtotal first, then add a proportional share of tax and tip (each person's subtotal divided by the group subtotal, multiplied by the tax+tip). Apps like Splitwise can automate this; this calculator handles the simpler even-split case.
